Provides education to new Coding employees through an orientation process onsite, remote or a combination of both, for all MedStar facilities. Provides ongoing education for all MedStar Coding staff on a continual basis. Coordinates with the Director of Coding Quality and Education to provide consistent education content for coding staff and CDI staff. Provides daily management of coding staff that are not meeting quality standards to coach and educate. Participates in team management meetings on associate performance improvement plans.
EDUCATION: High School graduation or equivalent. Bachelors degree preferred. Current AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification.
EXPERIENCE: 5 years experience in coding to include Coding Management, Coding Auditing, inpatient and outpatient coding in an acute care setting; experience working with physicians and other clinical professionals; experience in documentation review; coding/DRG (Diagnosis Related Groups) analysis required. Demonstrates knowledge of coding standards, TJC (The Joint Commission) standards, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and regulatory requirement.
LICENSE/CERT/REG: CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) certification from AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association).
SKILLS: Strong knowledge of MS DRG (Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups), APR DRG (All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups) and outpatient reimbursement methodologies Strong inpatient and outpatient coding skills. Strong knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology and Disease process. Excellent interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communications. Good public speaking and presentation skills, attention to detail, follow up on outstanding issues. Strong management skills.
